Report from Georgia School Boards Association Regarding Survey Results

Mr. Bill Sampson from the Georgia School Boards Association presented Board members with the results of the Superintendent Search Survey that sought feedback from employees and the community about what qualities they hope the next Superintendent will possess. The result was available online from January 10-20, 2014. More than 400 people took the online survey, and most of those identified themselves as employees of the Bibb County School District or parents of a student in Bibb schools. The responses showed the following: • Most said they think it should be mandatory that the next superintendent has previous experience as a superintendent, though almost as many said experience was important but not necessary. • About two-thirds said it should be mandatory for the next superintendent to have previous experience as a Principal. • About 75 percent of respondents said it should be mandatory for the next Superintendent to have experience as a classroom instructor. • More than half thought it would be important, but not mandatory, for the next Superintendent to have previous experience in a private business. • Respondents also thought the next Superintendent should have a documented history of leadership in community organizations and other community affairs, in professional organizations, and through public speaking and other oral communications. • The majority thought the next Superintendent should have special expertise in dealing with administration, personnel, curriculum, and budgets or school finance. Mr. Sampson also presented Board members with a draft of the brochure announcing the position and seeking applications, and Board members discussed what requirements they think candidates must meet. Mr. Sampson will send the brochure to the Board President Mrs. Sipe with the updated requirements from the Board this week. Board members will review the updated requirements in the brochure and if there are changes, Mrs. Sipe will submit the information to Mr. Sampson. If needed, a tentative date is scheduled on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. to finalize the brochure.No recorded vote.
