2016 Bill Barr Leadership Award Bibb County School District Superintendent, Dr. Curtis Jones, was presented with the Bill Barr Leadership Award during the Georgia School Superintendents Association (GSSA) Fall Conference in Athens, GA. The award is presented annually to one exceptional superintendent who possesses the unique ability to mentor and lead others in pursuing excellence in public education. 2016 Let's Move! Active Schools National Award Let's Move! Active Schools is an initiative of First Lady Michelle Obama that aims to ensure 60 minutes of physical activity a day for students in kindergarten through the 12th grade. Of the 544 schools honored nationally as Let's Move Active Schools, 16 were from Bibb County - Alexander II Magnet Elementary, Bruce Elementary, Bernd Elementary, Heard Elementary, Ingram-Pye Elementary, Lane Elementary, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, Porter Elementary, Skyview Elementary, Springdale Elementary, Taylor Elementary, Weaver Middle, Central High, Howard High, Rutland High, and Southwest High. GAESP School Bell Award The Georgia Assocaition of Elementary School Principals gives out School Bell Awards to no more than 10 schools each year with outstanding programs in the areas of curriculum and organizational leadership. The Vineville Academy of the Arts RoboPandras robotics team was one of the programs recognized this year. RoboPandas team members include Andrew Edwards, Daniel Biek, Dontavious Lofton, Gustavo Castaneda-Gomez, Isaiah Ford-Patterson, Janelle Sealy, Kyle Hicks, Mary-Katherine Lewis, Maya Jones and Skye Selby. The advisors are Leslie Brown and Thomas Trinh. Lions Club of Georgia Anne Sullivan Award The Lions Club of Georgia recognizes a teacher each year for its Anne Sullivan Award. This year's winner was Karen Remington, a Central High School teacher. Mr. Edward Adams, president of the Macon Cherry Blossom Lions Club presented Ms. Remington with the award. Award of Excellence - Symphony Learning (Educational Learning Systems) Educational Learning Systems recoginzed three District schools for their efforts with the Symphony Math program. These three schools were chosen to receive Awards of Excellence because of their use in an comprehensive instructional program and student gains in content mastery. The three schools chosen for the 2015-2016 Awards of Excellence were Brookdale Elementary, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Elementary, and Williams Elementary. Ms. Virginia Stoner with Educational Learning Systems presented the awards. Georgia State Superintendent's 2016-2017 Student Advisory Council State Superintendent Richard Woods selected 108 students in the state for his Student Advisory Council. The council will meet with the state superintendent throughout the year to discuss policy decisions, as well as serving as an amabassador within their respective schools. The three students selected from the Bibb County Schools were the following: - Jordan Lowe - Weaver Middle School - Shemitria Risper - Weaver Middle School - Ben Trofemuk - Academy for Classical Education Youth Development Professional of the Year Award - National Boys and Girls Clubs Each year the Boys and Girls Clubs recognize an individual with its Outstanding Youth Development Professional Award. This year, that award was presented to Northwoods Academy paraprofessional Tori Hall fo rher work with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Georgia. She was presented with the award at the Boys and Girls Clubs State Conference in Atlanta this fall. Retired Educators Month Resolution The Bibb Retired Educators Association (BREA) was presented with a resolution in honor of Retired Educators Month in November. The Georgia Retired Educators Association has chosen the month of November to celebrate retired educators and the state of Georgia recognizes Retired Educators Day on November 1st. Mr. Frank Tompkins, BREA president, was presented with the resolution from the Board of Education.No recorded vote.
