CTAE Students of the Year Recognized: The Bibb County School District’s Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) Department announced the 2014 District CTAE Student of the Year at its third annual CTAE Student of the Year Banquet on Wednesday, March 19, at Southwest High School. During the program, outstanding CTAE students from each high school were recognized, before Westside High School’s Taylor Babbs was announced the district-level winner. Northeast High School’s Christian Bell received second place among the honorees, and Rutland High School’s Christopher McCarter received third place. Other CTAE Students of the Year included Swanette Johnson, Central High School; Sandra Amadi, Howard High School; Jacob Crafton, Hutchings Career Center; and Crystal Battle, Southwest High School. At Westside High School, Taylor has demonstrated excellence in leadership, community and school involvement, and academic achievement. Her CTAE pathways are JROTC and Marketing, and she has been a leader at her school, serving as DECA President and Group Commander in JROTC. Taylor participates in community service efforts and interns in the school’s Spear-It Shop. She is also a member of the BETA Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and National Honor Society. She plans on attending Wesleyan College, where she has already received a $10,000 scholarship. In competing for the title of District CTAE Student of the Year, each student was judged on the same criteria by a panel of four judges. The criteria include overall Grade Point Average (GPA), pathway GPA, Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) leadership, CTSO chapter and community service participation, an essay entitled "How Career and Technical Education Has Affected Decisions About My Future," and an interview by the panel of community judges. Business and community leaders made up the panel of judges. The top three CTAE Students of the Year were awarded scholarships. The district-level winner received a $1,000 scholarship, second place received a $500 scholarship, and third place received a $350 scholarship. The scholarships are funded in part by the CTAE's annual Cinderella's Wish List Dress and Accessories Sale. CTAE offers a vast number of courses and programs that prepare students for the high demand skills needed for a wide range of careers. These careers may require varying levels of education - from high school and postsecondary certificates to two- and four-year college degrees. CTAE is designed to prepare high school students to transition successfully to postsecondary education and to acquire the skills and knowledge needed to find gainful employment.No recorded vote.

Mrs. Farmer stated that she has a previous scheduled event to attend and will not be available for the Called Board Meeting on March 25th. Dr. Steven Smith read a letter from the Macon Chamber of Commerce regarding guidance to engage business leaders and stakeholders in the community.

Mrs. Lynn Farmer gave an update from the Superintendent Search Committee on the superintendent search process. The Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) had received three applications for the position of superintendent as of last week. GSBA is receiving phone calls about the job daily, and has said most applications are typically submitted in the days right before the deadline, which is March 28th. GSBA feels the District is on target for a good response to the search. After the deadline, GSBA will screen the applications and present them to the Board in a ranked order for the Board members to select candidates to interview.No recorded vote.
